Date
[c. 1290-c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
People of the country of Pevensey.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The people complain that the bailiffs of the town have closed the king's passage of Pevensey and have put a boat across the have when the tide is out, and will not suffer any man to pass except by the boat, and charge them for this, when they were accustomed to pass without a boat or making a charge when the tide was out. They request that the king command that this outrage be removed.
Nature of endorsement
They did not come.
Places mentioned
Pevensey, Sussex.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1290-c. 1300 on the basis of the hand. The guard note suggests c. 1290 on the basis of a patent roll reference, but this reference does not seem to directly relate to the petition, and its relevance, if any, is uncertain (CPR 1281-92, p. 404).
