Nature of request
[Petition in seven parts].1) Three or four men are chosen from each vill but the people are often too poor to pay for even one.2) The people of little vills near Sandwich are not able to meet their obligation as their crops are sewn and the poor people who reside there are not able to suffer without them how their portion is able to be levied to serve the king.3) They will be weakened by the arraying of men as those of the Isle of Thanet and other vills by the sea that are often robbed by foreign people - Flemings and Normans.4) It is not expressed who should pay the wages and provide the armour for those who are not of any great lordship.5) It is not expressed how the king wishes that justices should be done to those who wish to ? go/desert.6) They request how and from whom they should have their expenses in the election as they understand that the king does not wish them to use their own money.7) They request that the king will give them his letters that this will not be taken as a precedent before they do this.
