Reference
SC 8/326/E734
Date
[1319]
Description
Petitioners
Philip de Melton.
Name(s)
de Melton, Philip
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Melton requests remedy as it was customary for the chief justice of the Bench to grant the office of crier for life, and Brabazon granted the office to Melton and he held it until Malemeyns suggested that the office pertained to the king whereupon the office was granted to her and he was ousted wrongfully. Melton petitioned to the parliament at York in the 11th year of the reign by which the chief justice was commanded to examine the custom, Melton vouching the transcript of this record and the writ.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
People mentioned
Ralph de Hengham, Chief Justice of the Bench
Bartholomew de Norhampton (Northampton), crier
Gilbert de Thornton, Chief Justice of the Bench
Roger le Brabazoun (Brabazon), Chief Justice of the Bench
Alice Malemeyns
Henry le Scrope, Chief Justice of the Bench.
Note
The petition is dated to 1319 on the basis of the dating given by Sayles (SCCKB, vol. V, pp.cxix-cxx). The petition itself refers to a petition presented to the York parliament of 11 Edw. II (1317-18), though this is perhaps an error for the one held in 1319.
