Description
Petitioners
Hugh de Courtenay.
Name(s)
de Courtenay, Hugh
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Courtenay requests that the king will enquire by knights and good men of the writing made by Isabella de Forz, his ancestor releasing and quitclaiming her rights in the Isle of Wight and the manor of Christchurch, and whether she died seised of them or not, and if the act is found to be hers and she did not die seised of them, then the petitioner grants that he and his heirs will be barred for all days from the tenement, and if it is found that it is not her act, and that she did die seised of the same, then the tenement be rendered to him as his right. He has long sued for the same to several parliaments, and the writing of his ancestor was produced against him.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be sent to Robert de Ashby, whose duty it was to receive bills and petitions in the parliament of Lincoln, which is referred to in this petition, so that he may inform himself about this business, and if the process thereon should lie in his possession, then he is to send back the whole of that process to the present parliament.Afterwards, after the petition with that process had been sent back, answer was made on it as appears below:Because our lord the king cannot profitably proceed to a final discussion of the business herein contained without more deliberation and advice, the business is continued in its present state until the next parliament, and Hugh is thereon adjourned there.
Places mentioned
Isle of Wight, [Hampshire]
Christchurch, [Hampshire]
Lincoln, [Lincolnshire]
Westminster.
People mentioned
Isabella de Fortz (Forz), ancestor of the petitioner.
Note
The petition is dated to 1318 on the basis of the date ascribed to this petition by Sayles who placed it as a petition from the parliament held at York in Michaelmas 1318 (Sayles, Functions, pp. 338-348). This is confirmed by Richardson and Sales in Rotuli Parliamentorum Angliae Hactenus Inediti, Camden Third Series, Vol. LI, (1935) pp. 64-8.
