Note
The petition presents some problems in dating as in the List of Sheriffs (p. 72) the late father of the petitioner is noted as serving as sheriff of Lancashire until Michaelmas 1291. However, three references in the fine rolls also record that a Henry de Lee with a son called William was dead by 1288, and the son had livery in 1289. If the fine roll references are right, it is possible that the List of Sheriffs is not entirely accurate in this instance. If the List of Sheriffs is correct and the fine rolls refer to different individuals then the petition can be dated to c. 1291-c. 1307 as the petition would be clearly after the end of Henry de Lee's term as sheriff which ended in 1291, and would have to allow a little after this for Henry de Lee's death. A dating of? c. 1289-c. 1307 has been adopted.
