Spenser requests that he be granted a charter of general pardon bearing date the 1 May 5 [Hen. IV]. He had heard that Richard II was alive in Scotland, and by his own madness went into various parts to know the truth of this, and when he found that he was dead and that he had no other king than King Henry he returned to the Household and he [...] for fear of being molested and aggrieved without that he had a pardon of the king.
