- The dean and chapter of the free chapel of Hastings castle request remedy because they are constantly troubled by notorious malefactors from Winchelsea and Hastings who have attacked, wounded, imprisoned and held to ransom their vicars and ministers and stolen from their chapel.

- The petition dates to 1331 when the petitioners were granted permission to enclose Hastings castle with a wall and gates, build dwelling houses for themselves therein, take the herbage belonging to the castle in the town of Hastings toward the cost of such closure, and have custody of the castle, in response to this petition (CPR 1330-4, p. 71).
