Nature of request
The dean and chapter of the free chapel of Hastings castle request remedy because they are constantly troubled by notorious malefactors from Winchelsea and Hastings who have attacked, wounded, imprisoned and held to ransom their vicars and ministers and stolen from their chapel.
Nature of endorsement
Certain people should be assigned in Chancery to enquire into this etc. and when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, the council should advise the King as to what should be done.

The petition dates to 1331 when the petitioners were granted permission to enclose Hastings castle with a wall and gates, build dwelling houses for themselves therein, take the herbage belonging to the castle in the town of Hastings toward the cost of such closure, and have custody of the castle, in response to this petition (CPR 1330-4, p. 71).
