Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Bilsington.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Bilsington request permission to lease 50 acres of the 60 acre marsh granted to them by the King in the manor of Over Bilsington to people who will drain and enclose it and hold it of them and their successors for a yearly rent. They are so impoverished that they cannot afford to do this themselves.
Nature of endorsement
The charter mentioned in this petition should be examined in Chancery and if it contains as many acres as the petition claims, it seems to the council that it would be to the King's profit to let them do as they request.
Places mentioned
Bilsington, [Kent]
Over Bilsington, [Kent].
People mentioned
[John de Wy], Prior of Bilsington.
Note
The petition dates to 1337, since the resulting grant of licence, dated November 1337, states that this petition was presented in the last Parliament at Westminster (CPR 1334-8, p. 555).
