Description
Petitioners
Tenants of Bamburgh.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The tenants of Bamburgh, who leased the castle demesne land for a fixed term of up to 40 years for 26 marks yearly, request letters patent leasing the land to them for 20 years at a fixed rent, since every time the constable of Bamburgh is changed his successor exacts a large gressum to his own use, forcing the tenants to let the land lie uncultivated.1)
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that it should be done if it pleases the King.2) Certain men should be assigned to enquire, in the presence of the constable of Bamburgh castle, into which constables have taken such gressum, their names, the amounts taken and the yearly value of the lands; the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer should certify in Chancery the amounts for which the constables have answered for the said lands; and they should have the said land by commission of Chancery for 15 years for the usual amount.
