Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/310/15481
Date
[1314-1316]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas le Long, tiler and merchant of London.
Name(s)
Long, Thomas
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
tiler and merchant
Nature of request
Thomas le Long requests remedy, stating that Nichol, usurping the power of the king in the city of London, on the eighth day after Michaelmas in the king's eighth year, sealed up his goods in his house, prevented him from trading, and imprisoned him in Newgate prison until he gave him a present of Calewey pears and made fine with him.
Nature of endorsement
Have a writ in chancery of concerning false imprisonment and other trespasses by the said John.
Places mentioned
London
Newgate prison, [London].
People mentioned
John de Nichol (Lincoln), citizen of London.
Note
The events referred to in the petition took place in the autumn of the king's eighth year, and the handwriting would suggest the reign of Edward II (i.e. 1314). The parties involved in a later legal case, noted in the London Letter Books, appear to have referred back to this case as precedent, noting that it was heard in Hilary term 9 Edward II (1316) (Calendar of London Letter Books, E, p.91). As the petitioner makes no mention of any hearing, the petition presumably dates to some point between the events of autumn 1314 and the 1316 case.
