Date
[? c. 1331]
Description

Abbot and Convent of St Mary's, York.
Addressees

Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of St Mary's, York, make a request regarding the rights of their monks at the priory of Wetheral, with regard to charters granted by Henry I and confirmed by the present king. However, the document is badly damaged and much of the context is lost.
Nature of endorsement
[Largely illegible.]
Places mentioned
York
Wederhal (Wetheral), [Cumberland]
Inglewood Forest, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Henry I, King of England
Keeper of Inglewood Forest.
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1330, with regard to CChR 1327-41, p.197 and p.219, charters confirmed by Edward III in 1330 and 1331. However, the earlier reference relates to charters dating from the reigns of William II and Henry II, with only the latter confirmations, made on 25 March 1331, relating to charters of Henry I. This might suggest a date in 1331 or later, but too little survives to allow further precision. A modern note on the dorse refers to 'The Register of the Priory of Wetherhal' (ed. J Prescott, London, 1897), p.410, but the relationship with that entry is unclear.
