Description
Petitioners
William de Welleby.
Name(s)
de Welleby, William
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
William de Welleby appears to request the payment to him for his service of £260 from the sums gathered for fines of crockards and pollards by Haward and Trikenham, and for which he now needs specific orders from the king. However, the petition is damaged and stained, and the precise context is difficult to reconstruct.
Nature of endorsement
Order by writ of Chancery the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that they make allocation to him and all persons seeking sums owed from crockards and pollards according to the tenor of the ordinance made in the time of the deceased king.
People mentioned
William Haward
Lambert de Trikenham (Threekingham).
Note
The petition relates to an ordinance made against 'pollards and crockards' (foreign coins circulating in England) during the reign of the 'deceased king', which is evidently the Ordinance of Stepney of 1299. This presumably dates the petition to the reign of Edward II, and probably the early part of the reign. Haward and Threekingham were amongst those appointed in 1300 to investigate breaches of this ordinance, Haward in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, and Threekingham in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire (CPR 1292-1301, pp.550-1).
