Note
This petition formed part of a long-running dispute between the king and the abbot over rights in this hospital. Orders to hold an inquisition on this matter were issued on 3 May 1342, but this was probably not the inquest mentioned here (CPR 1340-3, pp.456-7; the commissioners in 1342 were headed by William Scot, but the illegible surname of the justice does not appear to be Scot, and may be Lescrope). However, the petition itself clearly dates from rather later, and certainly after the death of Abbot Thomas de Henlee in October 1344. Henlee is described as the petitioner's predecessor, but not necessarily his immediate predecessor, and thus the petitioner may or may not be Henlee's successor, Simon de Bircheston (1344-9). William de la Zouche (Treasurer 1337-8, 1338-40) is described as the former Treasurer of 'our lord the king', not the 'late king', which would suggest that the petition dates to the latter part of Edward III's reign.
