Reference
SC 8/286/14284
Date
[1329-? c. 1337]
Description
Petitioners
Bertram Couden (Codene), clerk.
Name(s)
Couden (Codene), Bertram
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Bertram Couden states that various sums of money are due to him for his wages from the time when he was in the king's father's service during the last war in Gascony, and requests letters to the Constable of Bordeaux to examine the account and to pay him. He asks that the Constable might be ordered to pay him his fee and wages for the time when he was the king's father's proctor in the court of France, in Toulouse and elsewhere. He also requests payment of his fee and wages from the time when he was the king's father's counsellor in the Seneschalcy of the Agenais, and that he might have his accustomed fee from the time when he was Chief Judge of the Agenais. He also asks that an account might be made with him for the issues of what Edmund, Earl of Kent gave him, from the goods of enemies, in lieu of £200 of annual rent which he lost, and that he might be paid what is reasonable.
Nature of endorsement
It belongs to the Seneschal [by whom] it is attested that he gave the office of Chief Judge. With regard to the fees and wages, the Constable of Bordeaux is to be ordered to account with him, and to pay him what he finds by account is due to him as soon as he properly can.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
France
Toulouse, [Languedoc, France]
Agenais, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Edmund [of Woodstock], Earl of Kent.
Note
Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent, was King's Lieutenant in Gascony between July 1324 and January 1326. This, and the references to debts from the time of the king's father, suggest a date early in the reign of Edward III, but after 1329, when the petitioner was appointed as justice in the Agenais (Carte, vol. I p.72). Check C 61/43 m.4, dated 11 December 1331, and no.5065 of C 81/186, dated 13 December 1331.
