Nature of request
Peter Arnold de Ville, burgess of Bayonne, Ferand his companion, and Adam de Gelde, merchants of San Sebastian, state that they had charged a ship with merchandise to the value of 3000 marks sterling, for the profit of the realm of England, but that it was driven aground by a storm between Portland and Abbotsbury. The mariners all escaped, but the people of Portland, Weymouth, Wyke Regis and others, to the number of 2000, broke up the ship and stole their goods, which they sold at Salisbury and elsewhere, so that the merchants have become poor. They ask the king to send his justices to correct this great injury to them.
