Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/286/14260
Date
[1307-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Peter (Pey) de Besaz (Bazas) of Bayonne.
Name(s)
de Besaz (Bazas), Peter (Pey)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Peter de Besaz states that Ralph de Dalton, the late king's clerk, took wheat from him at Newcastle to the sum of £6, for the king's use, as the good people of Newcastle know well; and he has never been able to have payment or any security for this. He requests a remedy, as the sum has been allowed to Ralph in his account.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered by writ of Chancery that, when they have examined the petition, they are to do what is just.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Ralph de Dalton, clerk of the late king
[Edward I], King of England.
Note
SC 8/33/1630 and SC 8/33/1632, apparently from the same petitioner, are requests for payment for a much larger debt dating from the time of the late king. A writ to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer of Ireland to pay Besaz from the customs of Dublin and Drogheda, dated 8 June 1315, can be found on p.184 of CCR 1313-18, and another petition on the same subject was answered in the parliament of October 1318 (Docs. Illus. English History, p.45). A date in the reign of Edward II, and possibly between 1307 and 1320, would agree with the hand and language of this petition. Check no.166 of C 81/137, which is however from 1 Edward III.
