Reference
SC 8/286/14255
Date
[? 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Bernard (Bernat) de Semence (Semains, Semens), knight.
Name(s)
de Semence (Semains, Semens), Bernard (Bernat)
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
[Gascony, France].
Nature of request
Bernard (Bernat) de Semence states that since the beginning of the war he has lost his entire inheritance, to the sum of £50 sterling and more, and requests such remuneration that he does not lose his inheritance and remain in poverty.
Nature of endorsement
The king has ordained that he will swiftly send certain great men with full power to do the things that will be fitting and profitable for him and for his subjects; and the king will order them that, when they have received information on his losses, they are to give him such remuneration as is fitting and may reasonably be sufficient.
Note
From the hand, language, and content, this petition would seem to date from the aftermath of the war of St Sardos. The grant to the petitioner of an annuity and a lump sum on m. 9 of C 61/42 is dated 1 May 1330, and would seem likely to be in response to this petition.
