SC 8/285/14237
Date
[? c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
William Arnold (Guilhem Arnaut), Lord of Auros.
Name(s)
Lord of Auros, William Arnold (Guilhem Arnaut)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William Arnold, Lord of Auros, states that he has served the king well and loyally in the war in Gascony, and is always ready to serve him to the best of his ability, but that he is owed arrears of his wages from the time when John Travers was Constable of Bordeaux, and from the time of the present Constable as well. He asks that the present Constable, or the person who will be Constable for the time being, might be ordered to pay him these arrears, or to make him an allowance from the prevote of Entre-Deux-Mers, so that he can continue to serve the king, for his benefit and that of the Duchy.
Nature of endorsement
The Constable of Bordeaux is to be ordered to account with him and to pay him what is found from the account to be due to him, as soon as he properly can.
Places mentioned
Auros, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Entre-Deux-Mers, [Guyenne, France]
Duchy [of Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
John Travers, Constable of Bordeaux.
Note
John Travers was Constable of Bordeaux between April 1324 and Easter 1326, and between June 1331 and February 1335. The mention of the war (probably the war of St Sardos) would suggest that this petition dates from shortly after the end of Travers' first period of office. There are instructions to pay the petitioner his wages on m.7 of C 61/40, dated 20 May 1328, and on m.4 of C 61/41, dated 18 August 1329.
