Date

Description
Petitioners
Mayor and community of Bourg.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The Mayor and community of Bourg state that they are greatly impoverished by the wars in Gascony, and that they have to make great repairs to the moveable bridges and other defences, which they cannot afford. They request letters patent for the gift that previous seneschals have made to them on the wines sold in taverns, so that they can enclose their town and defend it from their enemies to the king's benefit, as Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion, and other towns have this usage.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent to the seneschal, so that, when he has taken advice on the things contained in it, he is further to do what seems to him to be allowable for the salvation of the town and the honour of the king.
Places mentioned
Bourg, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Saint-Emilion, [Guyenne, France].
Note
From the hand and language, this petition probably dates from the aftermath of the war of St Sardos, and most probably from the early years of Edward III, although there is a grant to the mayor, jurats and community of Bourg of cartonage on wine on m.15 of C 61/69, dated 10 August 1357.
