Nature of request
Bertrand de Villar, merchant of Bayonne, states that he has sued in his own name and that of his late companion, Peregrine de Listo, for compensation for goods taken from them in the port of Sandwich by men of the Cinque Ports, and that they have had partial satisfaction from the men of Sandwich and Winchelsea, at the king's command: most of which they have spent on their suit. He has sued three times for the remainder, and various writs have been sent to the ports of Dover and Hastings; but the people of these ports have done nothing, in contempt of the king's command and to the great impoverishment of the two merchants. Bertrand asks that such a remedy might be ordained that he might not be destroyed.
