Description
Petitioners
John (Joan) Lesquirel.
Name(s)
Lesquirel, John (Joan)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
John Lesquirel states that he has served the king and his father for forty years and more, in England, Gascony, and elsewhere, and the nobles of England who served in the war in Gascony can attest, without any other reward than his sustenance, and that he is now so old and enfeebled that he cannot work. He has also lost houses and vines in Bordeaux to the sum of 100 marks, so that he has nothing from which to live. He requests sustenance for the short time he has to live in the Abbey of St Augustine, Canterbury, and that the abbot and convent might be ordered to receive him, and to give him a letter under their common seal as guarantee of his sustenance.
Nature of endorsement
Coram domino rege. They are to sue before the King's Seneschal, and the Keeper of the Wardrobe, and the King's confessor, who have been assigned to this; and they are further to do for them what is to be done.

Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Canterbury, [Kent].
People mentioned

Note
Mention of the petitioner's service of forty years or more to the king and his father suggests a date in the reign of Edward II, and mention of the war in Gascony suggests that this petition is from the immediate aftermath of the war of St Sardos.
