SC 8/285/14210
Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Amaneu de Fossat (Foussat), Lord of Madaillan.
Name(s)
de Fossat (Foussat), Lord of Madaillan, Amaneu
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Madaillan, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Puymirol, [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
Amaneu de Fossat, Lord of Madaillan, states that, by reason of the peace treaty lately made in Gascony, a great part of the mesne castle of Madaillan has been knocked down. He requests letters of permission to rebuild it, as soon as he has his loan, and also requests confirmation of the keeping of the castle of Puymirol, as his father held it.
Nature of endorsement
.With regard to the rebuilding of his castle which is destroyed, the king will ordain for him and for others in such a case what should reasonably satisfy them. With regard to the keeping of Puymirol, the king has understood that his seneschal has entrusted its keeping to him, and wills that he have its keeping until the king is advised.
Note
According to M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War (Oxford, 1990), p.116, the petitioner was given permission to rebuild his castle in 1331, so this petition would seem to date from 1331 or shortly before. C 47/26/19 dates from the early years of Edward III, and is a detailed account of the petitioner's losses, which does not, however, mention the destruction of this castle. CPR 1327-30 p.491 is dated 28 February 1330, and may be relevant. The instructions to the Seneschal to inquire into whether the petitioner should be given Libourne and Puymirol in part payment of his debts on m.1 of C 61/45 are dated 10 January 7 Edward II (1334). Check no.7147 of C 81/207.
