SC 8/285/14208
Date
[c. 1328-c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Peter (Pey) de Gavarret (Gabarret), Lord of Langon.
Name(s)
de Gavarret (Gabarret), Lord of Langon, Peter (Pey)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Peter de Gavarret, Lord of Langon 'en sa partie' [i.e. co-lord of Langon], states that when the Earl of Kent was in the country he gave him, in compensation for a rent lost because of his service to the king, the land of Lillan, with the proviso that if it was not worth £1000 tournois, he should receive the shortfall in the Treasury in Bordeaux, and that if it was worth more he should pay the surplus. It is worth only £400 tournois, and he requests letters to the Seneschal and Constable to pay him the remainder of his £1000, together with the arrears for four years, his wages, and compensation for horses lost by him and his wife. And he asks that the Seneschal and Constable might be ordered to provide him with some suitable place where he and his wife can live honourably, as, by the ordinance of the [Bishop of] Norwich, he has had to deliver into the hands of the French the lands he recovered with the king's aid.
Nature of endorsement
This bill is to be sent to the Seneschal of Gascony and the Constable, for them to advise themselves on its contents, and further to do what they can in all good ways for the said Peter; and they are to inform the king of what they cannot do themselves at the request of the said Peter, without more precise command, so that he can command his will for the said Peter.
Places mentioned
Langon, [Guyenne, France]
Lillan, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
[Edmund of Woodstock], Earl of Kent
[William Ayermine], Bishop of Norwich.
Note
The Earl of Kent was the King's Lieutenant in Gascony between July 1324 and January 1326, and this petition dates from approximately four years after he gave the petitioner this land: therefore from c. 1328-1330. The petition is discussed by M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy, p.242.
