Reference
SC 8/284/14190
Date
[? 1327-? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Bernard (Bernat) de Semains (Semens), knight.
Name(s)
de Semains (Semens), Bernard (Bernat)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Bernard de Semains states that he served the king's grandfather in his wars in Gascony, and suffered greatly as a result, and has never had any compensation. And he has also serve the present king during the last war, and has been completely disinherited, and has also been imprisoned; and has received only £80 sterling which Oliver de Ingham gave him in aid of his ransom. He requests some compensation, so that he can maintain his estate.
Nature of endorsement
The king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages given and received, and the damages inflicted, and the condition of the people, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England
[Philip IV], King of France
Oliver de Ingham.
Note
From the mention of the king's grandfather, this petition would seem to date from the beginning of the reign of Edward III; and from the mention of the sending of a new seneschal, it would seem to date to either around February 1327 (before the appointment of John de Haustede) or to around June 1332 (before the appointment of Oliver de Ingham). The dating of SC 8/282/14093, which has an identical endorsement, suggests that the latter date is more likely.
