Description
Petitioners
Walter de Weston, king's clerk.
Name(s)
de Weston, Walter
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
king's clerk
Nature of request
Walter de Weston states that the king has granted him the office of scrivener in his court of Gascony, to hold at pleasure, and that, whereas when the duchy belonged to the king in its entirety and was at peace, the office with the keeping of the seal and the emolument pertaining to it belonged entirely to the clerk, recently the seneschals have taken the seal and half the emolument, whereas he still has to pay all the costs and all the clerks necessary for the office, so that he cannot maintain himself. He requests this office, with the keeping of the seal and the emolument, for term of life, to hold in person or through some other suitable person.
Nature of endorsement
The king is to be advised about the request, and is further to command his pleasure.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
Duchy [of Aquitaine, France].
Note
From the hand and language, this petition would seem to date from after the war of St Sardos, and probably from the early part of the reign of Edward III. A Walter of Weston was Constable of Bordeaux in 1347-1348.
