Name(s)
Verger, Johanot (John, Joan)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
attorney of Fortaner Desgarebake, knight
Nature of request
Johanot du Verger, attorney of Fortaner Desgarebake, knight states that he has come before the King on the business of Fortaner's nephew, who is in the prison of the King of France for his service to the King. Johanot expected to find the King at Amiens, but he has crossed the sea, and so has incurred greater costs than he expected: so that he has pawned his robe, and cannot afford to pursue his business or return home. He requests some payment of the king's grace so that he can redeem his robe and pursue the business of Fortaner's nephew.
Nature of endorsement
The king does not know if he is a proctor or not.
Places mentioned
Amiens, [Picardy, France]
[Gascony, France].
People mentioned
Fortaner Desgarebake (d'Esgarrebaque), knight
King of France.
Note
From the hand, language and content, this petition would seem to date from the early years of the reign of Edward III. The reference to Edward III being at Amiens may suggest a reference to the homage given to Philip VI at that city in 1329.
