SC 8/284/14170
Date
[? c. 1327-? c. 1337]
Description
Petitioners
Gaucem Dynac (Dinhac), sergeant-at-arms, Arnold (Arnaut) Dalisant, and Peter (Pey) de Campaignes (Campanhas), brothers.
Name(s)
Dynac (Dinhac); Dalisant; de Campaignes (Campanhas), Gaucem; Arnold (Arnaut); Peter (Pey)
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Lege, (Lege-Cap-Ferret), [Guyenne, France]
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
Arcachon, [Guyenne, France].
Nature of request
Gaucem Dynac, Arnold Dalisant, and Peter de Campaignes, who are brothers, states that they had a lodging and other goods in Lege, which belongs to the chapter of St Andrew at Bordeaux, and that when a dispute arose between the king and the chapter because of a ship that had been washed up on the coast of Arcachon by a storm, that had been robbed and plundered by the people of Lege, the Seneschal of Gascony and Constable of Bordeaux sent men to attach the people of Lege, and to take it into the king's hand. Some of them were lodged in the petitioners' lodging, and because of this, the lodging was set on fire, and they lost goods worth £300 tournois and more. They ask that the Seneschal and Constable might be ordered to inquire into this, and to give them compensation.
Nature of endorsement
This bill is to be sent to the Seneschal of Gascony so that, when he has advised himself on the things contained in it, he is further to do justice and reason according to the laws (fores) and customs of the country.
Note
From the hand and language, this petition probably comes from the early years of Edward III, although it could be slightly earlier. It is hard to be certain if this incident is the same as the one described in SC 8/281/14001, but it seems quite likely.
