SC 8/284/14163
Date

Description
Petitioners
Amaluyn (Amaubin, Amaneu) de Vares (Bares), lord of Montferrand.
Name(s)
de Vares (Bares), lord of Montferrand, Amaluyn (Amaubin, Amaneu)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is damaged] Amaluyn de Vares, lord of Montferrand, makes two requests:1) He states that he has lost certain rents in Saintonge because of the war between the King's father and the King of France, and asks that he might have a similar amount of rent in some place in Gascony in compensation.2) He asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might be ordered to pay the wages due to him and his companions.
Nature of endorsement
The king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages given and received, and the damages inflicted, and the condition of the people, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied. With regard to the wages: the present Constable of Bordeaux etc. is to be ordered to account with him for his wages, and to pay him what is due to him.Done with regard [to the wages].
Places mentioned
Montferrand (Montferrand-en-Bordelais), [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Saintonge, [France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
[Charles IV], King of France.
Note
From the mention of losses in the war between the King's father and the King of France, this petition would seem to date from the early years of the reign of Edward III, and and from the mention of the sending of a new seneschal, to either around February 1327 (before the appointment of John de Haustede) or to around June 1332 (before the appointment of Oliver de Ingham). SC 8/284/14151 and SC 8/284/14152, both of which have similar endorsements, seem date from 1332, and this would therefore seem to be the date for this petition as well.
