Description
Petitioners
Peter (Pey), Lord of Castelnau-Tursan.
Name(s)
Lord of Castelnau-Tursan, Peter (Pey)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Peter, Lord of Castelnau-Tursan, makes two requests:1) He states that at the request of Anthony Pessaygne, formerly Seneschal of the Duchy of Aquitaine, he entered into a pareage with the king to construct a bastide called Geaune on his land, and that he received the king into a half share in the jurisdiction of his castle of Castelnau-Tursan, in exchange for certain rents promised to him by the Seneschal; but the Seneschal was removed from office before he could give these to him. He asks the king to acquit that half-jurisdiction to him and his successors, so that he holds it in the same way as he did before the pareage was made, or to fulfil the terms and conditions of the pareage. He also asks the king to ratify and confirm the pareage concerning the building of the bastide.2) He states that the Count of Armagnac attacked him and his people with an armed force, killing and burning, and that Anthony Pessaygne, formerly Seneschal of the Duchy of Aquitaine, took his castle of Bachen into the king's hand, and gave it into the keeping of the Seneschal of the Landes, to guard it and to prevent the Count from attacking Peter, his goods and those of his people. Notwithstanding this, the Count's people have burnt and destroyed this castle, and carried off various goods found there. Then William de Monte Acuto, formerly Seneschal of the Duchy of Aquitaine, imposed a truce between the parties, on certain terms, but the Count has continued his attacks despite this. He asks that the Seneschal or his Lieutenant might be ordered to inquire into this, and to punish the Count and his people, both for their destruction of the castle and for their breaking of the truce; and to give Peter suitable compensation.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] He is to show the instruments and letters for the agreement and pareage, and justice is to be done to him.[To second] The Seneschal of Gascony is to be ordered that, calling the parties, he is to do full justice concerning the contents of the petition.[On dorse] Answered inside, at the ends of the petitions.
