Description
Petitioners
Asfaldus (Asfald) de Savinhaco (Saumhaco, Savignac), domicellus.
Name(s)
de Savinhaco (Saumhaco, Savignac), Asfaldus (Asfald)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Asfald de Savinhaco makes four requests:1) He states that a sum of money is owed him by the king for his wages and those of his men in the war of Gascony, and that the Seneschal of Gascony and Constable of Bordeaux have given him the bailiwick of Penne d'Agenais for two years in part payment of this, and this has been confirmed by the king's council in Gascony. He asks that the king might also confirm it.2) He requests letters to the Seneschal and Constable to given him payment or an assignment for the rest of the money owed to him.3) He states that he was given the keeping of the castle of Galhardum near Penne d'Agenais, and has held it since Oliver de Inhgam left Gascony, and asks that it might be granted to him to keep with due and reasonable wages in whatever seems to the king and council to be the best way, so that he can maintain his estate.4) He states that the Seneschal of the Agenais for the King of France daily summons and adjourns him, his son, his brother and their family before him, to their great harm, for damages inflicted in the Gascon war and by virtue of false letters. As the king has done homage to the King of France for the Duchy of Aquitaine, he asks the king to write to the King of France to order the Seneschal of Agenais to cease from this, and to return him to his previous status, so that they can travel safely in the realm of France; and this especially because what is done is contrary to the peace.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the confirmation: the King wishes to be informed of the value of the bailiwick mentioned by the petition, and of the good behaviour of the said Asfald; and concerning this he will send a suitable Seneschal to the Duchy, who will have power to ordain for such bailiwicks for the profit of the lord. With regard to his wages: the present Constable of Bordeaux etc. is to be ordered to account with him and to pay him what is due to him.Done with regard to the wages. With regard to the castle: the present Seneschal and Constable etc. are to be ordered to inform themselves of the value of the castle, and of the men-at-arms who should be stationed there and of their wages, and of all other things touching the keeping of the said castle, so that the King can further do what seems to him is to be done, on the advice of his good council. With regard to the summons and adjournments made against him and his people: the messengers who will go to the parlement of Paris at the octaves of Michaelmas will be charged with this business and others touching the King and his subjects of the Duchy.
