Reference
SC 8/284/14155
Date
[1330-1331]
Description
Petitioners
Bernard (Bernat) de Burgeto, inhabitant of Puymirol.
Name(s)
de Burgeto, Bernard (Bernat)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly faded and hard to read] Bernard de Burgeto makes three requests:1) He states that he lost many goods and suffered great damages in the wars in Gascony, and that Amaneu del Faste (?), at that time captain of Puymirol, had a commission from the Earl of Kent, then the King's Lieutenant in Gascony, to compensate the people of Puymirol for their losses, and compensated Bernard by giving him an acquittance for debts owed to him by the king's enemies and rebels; which was confirmed by Oliver de Ingham, then Seneschal of Gascony. But his creditors have refused to accept this, and have moved against him by censure of Holy Church, and by seizing his goods. He asks that this grant might be confirmed, and that he might have some remedy, as he has suffered so many losses that he can barely maintain his estate.2) He asks that a gift of the Seneschal of Gascony [illegible] might be confirmed.3) He requests letters to the present Seneschal of Gascony and Constable of Bordeaux, or those who will occupy those posts, to pay him the money due to him for his wages, from the time when John Travers and John de Weston were Constables of Bordeaux.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the confirmation: the King will shortly send a suitable Seneschal to the Duchy, who will have full power to ordain for this business and others touching the King and his subjects, and who will ordain for his estate according to his desert, so that he will reasonably consider himself satisfied. With regard to the wages: the present Constable of Bordeaux etc. is to be ordered to account with him for his wages, and to pay him what is due to him.
Places mentioned
Puymirol, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Duchy [of Aquitaine (Guyenne), France].
People mentioned
Amaneu del Faste (?), captain of Puymirol
Edmund [of Woodstock], Earl of Kent, King's Lieutenant in Gascony
Oliver de Ingham, Seneschal of Gascony
John Travers, Constable of Bordeaux
John de Weston, Constable of Bordeaux.
Note
John Travers was Constable of Bordeaux between April 1324 and Easter 1326, and John de Weston was Constable of Bordeaux between February 1327 and January 1330. This petition would seem to date from after the end of John de Weston's period of office and before the re-appointment of John Travers as Constable in June 1331 and Oliver de Ingham as Seneschal of Gascony in June 1332.
