Description
Petitioners
Arnold William (Arnaut Guilhem), Lord of Bergouey, domicellus.
Name(s)
Lord of Bergouey, Arnold William (Arnaut Guilhem)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Arnold William, Lord of Bergouey, makes two requests:1) He states that he appealed from the jurisdiction of the Count of Armagnac to the jurisdiction of the then Seneschal of Gascony concerning certain grievances inflicted upon him by the count, and the Seneschal took him and his goods into the king's protection. The count then expelled him and his wife and family from the castle of Bergouey, and seized his possessions there; but Anthony Pezagne, Seneschal of Gascony, forced him to restore it, and William de Monte Acuto, Seneschal of Gascony, ordered the Prevot of St-Sever to inquire into his damages. This was done, but William had died in the meantime, and Arnold William has not been able to have justice since. He also states that because of his poverty and mis-treatment by the count, and in satisfaction of his injuries, Gilbert Peche, Seneschal of Gascony, gave him the bailiwick of Villeneuve in the Agenais; but the Treasurer of the Agenais compels him to pay the full lease. He asks that the Seneschal of Gascony might be ordered to give him goods and swift justice, according to the laws and customs of the country, based on the inquisition, and that the Treasurer might be ordered to restore to him the sums taken for the bailiwick, or as much as it pleases the king for him to have for his damages, receiving an allowance in his account for this.2) He asks that the Seneschal of Gascony and all the king's other officers in the Duchy of Aquitaine might be ordered to maintain and defend him in all the goods he had when the appeal was made, and the goods about which the appeal was made.
Nature of endorsement
To the first two concerning the expulsion and damages and the inquisition to be made public, the Seneschal will be ordered to do justice according to the custom of the country. To the third article of the said petition, concerning the said bailiwick, the Seneschal and Treasurer of the Agenais will be ordered that, having come to an agreement on the matter, and considering his service and person, they are to ordain as seems to them to be done.Concerning the last petition: letters of justice will be granted to him.
