Description
Petitioners
Raymond Bernard (Ramon Bernat) de Marmande of the Agenais.
Name(s)
de Marmande, Raymond Bernard (Ramon Bernat)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Raymond Bernard de Marmande makes two requests:1) He states that he has served the King and his father in the war in Gascony from the beginning until now, and has lost his lands and seen his castles destroyed by the French, and has had no compensation, except for the lands of Peter de la Mote in the Bazadais, which Oliver de Ingham gave him when he was Seneschal, and which he lost again because of the agreement between the king and the King of France that lands won by force of arms by the King of England's people in the Bazadais were to be surrendered. Since then he has received no wages and has been forced to sell his horses and equipment to maintain his estate. He asks that he might be compensated from the rebel lands in the king's hand: that is, the lands of the Lady of Marensin, the land of Blanquefort, which belonged to the wife of the Count of Armagnac, the lands of the Lady of Tiran and the lands of Arnold de Noellan.2) He asks that he might be paid the remaining sum due to him for his wages, in sterling, in England.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the losses: the king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied. With regard to the wages: the Constable of Bordeaux is to be ordered to account with him, and to pay him what is due to him.Done, with regard to the wages.

Note
Oliver de Ingham was Seneschal of Gascony between March 1326 and February 1327, and between June 1332 and July 1343. He would have given the petitioner his lands during his first period of office, and, with the mention in the endorsement of the sending of a new seneschal, this petition would seem to date from around the time of his second appointment in 1332. M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy, p.116 and pp.243-244 dates this petition to c. 1330.
