Description
Petitioners
Fortener Desgarebake (d'Esgarrebaque), knight.
Name(s)
Desgarebake (d'Esgarrebaque), Fortener
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Fortener Desgarebake petitions on behalf of Monot Dartigose, his nephew, who has served the king and his father in the wars in Gascony, and has lost the goods that he had in the power of the King of France because of the dispute between the Normans and the Bayonnais, when he was accused of being Bayonnais whereas he is from St-Jean-de-Sordes. During the truce in the war between the King's father and the King of France, when the Earl of Kent was Keeper of Gascony, he entered the lands of the King of France to demand the return of his goods, and was captured and imprisoned in the castle of St-Jean-d'Angely until the truce failed. He then escaped, and for that was banished from the realm of France. In the last war between the King and the King of France, he was in the garrison of the castle of Saintes; and because of this, when peace was made, he was again imprisoned in the castle of St-Jean-d'Angely, where he has been for a year and a half, and still is; and the French are making foul and untrue accusations against him, so that he will die for his good service as the King's liege man. Fortener asks the king to write to the King of France, to order his Seneschal of Saintonge to release him; and also to restore his goods to him, so that he can maintain his estate.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first: the king will send messengers to the parlement of France, who will be charged with this business among others touching his subjects of the Duchy. With regard to the losses: the king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied.

Note
From the mention of the king's father, this petition would seem to date from the beginning of the reign of Edward III, and from the mention of the sending of a new seneschal, is it likely to date to either around February 1327 (before the appointment of John de Haustede) or to around June 1332 (before the appointment of Oliver de Ingham). The mention of the last war, in the time of the present king, makes it clear that it is the second of these dates that is probably the correct one.
