Reference
SC 8/283/14145
Date
[? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Raymond (Ramon) de Milcentz (Mille Seintz, Milcent), castellan of Mauleon.
Name(s)
de Milcentz (Mille Seintz, Milcent), Raymond (Ramon)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Raymond de Milcentz, castellan of Mauleon, makes two requests:1) He states that he is in arrears with his wages from the time of the king's father and from the time of the present king, and asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might be ordered to account with him and to give him payment or an assignment for what is owed him.2) He states that he and his companions have lost their goods and lands to the Count de Foix for their service to the king, and asks the king to order the present seneschal and constable, or those who will be the seneschal and constable, to inquire into this and to give him compensation.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the wages: the present Constable of Bordeaux etc. is to be ordered to account with him for his wages, and to pay him what is due to him. With regard to the losses: the king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages given and received, and the damages inflicted, and the condition of the people, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied.Done with regard to the wages.
Places mentioned
Mauleon-d'Armagnac, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Count de Foix.
Note
From the mention of the king's father, this petition would seem to date from the beginning of the reign of Edward III, and from the mention of the sending of a new seneschal, to either around February 1327 (before the appointment of John de Haustede) or to around June 1332 (before the appointment of Oliver de Ingham). The dating of SC 8/282/14093, which has an identical endorsement, suggests that the latter date is more likely: and this is confirmed by the grant of the custody of Mauleon to the petitioner on 20 August 2 Edward III (1328) (m.3 of C 61/40). There is an order to pay the petitioner his wages on m.14 of C 61/54, dated 2 June 16 Edward III (1342), but as these wages are described as being from the time of the present king, not his father, as 1342 is rather late to be requesting payment for wages from the time of Edward II, and as a new seneschal was appointed in 1343, not 1342, this date seems unlikely.
