Nature of request
Peter, Abbot of St-Ferme, states that he is sending the king the inquisition into the bastide of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne held by Adam de Norflor' and John de Forgettis, by the hands of Bernard de Semench, William Raymundi de Seguro, and Jordan de Puech, although he fears that the malevolence of certain neighbours might bring them harm. He asks the king to take counsel on the business of the inquisition, so that the community of the bastide, attracted there by the liberties and franchises granted by his predecessors, might not be cheated. He states that, despite what anyone might say to the contrary, the place is populous and fertile, and if it is not crushed by its neighbours, the king's subjects, will redound to the king's honour. The king has ordered John de Forgettis and Gombaut de Mercato to do justice to him in the matter of the harm done to him and his convent by the mill constructed by John de Grely, Seneschal of Gascony, on the Dropt; but they cannot or will not do so, although frequently asked by the Abbot. He asks the king to give these orders again to them, or to similar people.

Note
From the names of the proctors, contemporary with SC 8/283/14142. Roles Gascons, vol. II no.523 is dated 10 November 9 Edward I (1281), no.527 is dated 28 November, nos. 599-600 are dated 4 July (1282), and nos.605-606 are dated 3 July (1282). As from the contents of this petition the inquisition appears to have taken place, it would seem to be datable to 1282. The three proctors are mentioned by name in no.606.
