Name(s)
de Gontald (Gontaud), Lord of the castle of Beaulieu, Peter (Pey)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Peter de Gontald makes two requests:1) He states that at the time of the construction of the bastide, an agreement was entered into between him and John de Greyly, King's Lieutenant in the Duchy of Guyenne, that because the bastide was built within the jurisdiction of the castle of Beaulieu, half the jurisdiction over the bastide, excluding high justice, was to be common between him and the king; and he had this half jurisdiction, which he has recovered several times by judgment, and from which he has now been expelled by the king's people, when they took the bastide back into the king's hand after the war in Gascony. He asks that this jurisdiction might be returned to him and the agreements kept as they were before the war; and he is ready to do fealty to the king for this by letters and by instrument, before the king or his council.2) He states that he holds some houses of the king in Lauzun in the diocese of Agen, which he intends to build up and increase in height, to the king's honour and profit; but he believes that the lords and people of those parts intend to obstruct him. He asks that the Seneschal of the Agenais might be ordered to prevent such obstructions and, if any occurs, to remove it.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first petition: the Seneschal of Perigord is to be ordered that, when he has called the king's defender and the others who are to be called, he is to do swift justice to the petitioner. With regard to the other petition concerning the heightening of the house: the Seneschal of the Agenais is to be ordered not to allow any undue disturbance to take place.
