Description
Petitioners
Consuls of Lunac and others harmed by Arnold Garcie de Fossat.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The consuls of Lunac in the Agenais and others harmed by Arnold Garcie de Fossat make three requests:1) They state that Arnold Garcie de Fossat was condemned to pay various sums to the king and to those he had harmed by Amaury, Lord of Craon, formerly Seneschal of Gascony, and also to destroy the gatehouse of his castle of Aiguillon without hope of rebuilding. The gatehouse was destroyed, but Amaneu de Fossat, Arnold Garcie de Fossat, and the inhabitants of Aiguillon are building another in its place. They ask that the Seneschals of Gascony and the Agenais might be ordered to examine this sentence and then to prevent the new gateway being built and to put the sentence into execution in all its heads without delay.2) They ask that the letters under the seal of Gascony of Amaury, Lord of Craon and of William de Monte Acuto, formerly Seneschals of Gascony, concerning the new bastide of Aiguillon, whose building has been interrupted by an attack which killed many inhabitants and drove out the others, might be confirmed, and that the present Seneschals of Gascony and the Agenais, or the Seneschals for the time being, might be ordered to have the bastide rebuilt and repopulated without delay; and that the inhabitants might enjoy their previous franchises and liberties.3) They ask that the present Seneschals of Gascony and the Agenais, or the Seneschals for the time being, might be instructed to order those who received wood, stones and cement for the construction of a bridge over the River Lot by the consuls and inhabitants of the bastide, or their heirs or those who hold their goods, to return these materials to them.
Nature of endorsement
[On face, to first] It is to be done because it is just.[To second] The Seneschal of Gascony is to be ordered to inform himself on this deed, and to do on this matter what seems to him to be expedient for the king's advantage and benefit.[To third] The Seneschal is to be ordered that, when he has called those who are to be called, he is to do justice.[None on dorse]
