Date
[? c. 1327-? c. 1335]
Description
Petitioners
John (Joan) Coleun (Colom).
Name(s)
Coleun (Colom), John (Joan)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Coleun requests some compensation for certain goods seized when Arnold Calihou was arrested, which he lists, including wines taken by James de Beofler, then king's butler, as they ought by right to belong to him as Arnold's heir, and asks specifically that he might receive their value from the bailiwick of Born and Mimizan.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the goods and chattels: he is to show the names of the persons who took the goods and chattels contained in the bill, and the king will do him justice and reason. With regard to the wines: the king understands that the butlers and their lieutenants were served with every penny for the wines which they took for the use of his progenitors or his use; and he will be ready to do justice to all those who wish to complain about any of the butlers or their lieutenants. And for this reason he is to sue to the person who took them or to his executors. With regard to the claim put forward to goods or lands because he says that he is the heir, he is to show the right that he has in them, and justice will be done to him.

People mentioned
Arnold (Arnaut) Calihou (Calhau)
James de Beofler (Beauflour), king's butler.
Note
CPR 1313-17 p.257 is dated 6 March 1315, CPR 1321-4 p.42 is dated 25 December 1321, and CPR 1324-7 p.184 is dated 16 October 1325. CCR 1333-7 p.532, a plea for dower from Emma, widow of James Beauflour dated 3 November 1335, would suggest that if it is the same man, he was dead by that date, and the mention of the king's progenitors in relation to Beauflour's period of office would suggest that this petition comes from the reign of Edward III. Tentatively dated according to these factors. Check m.20 of C 61/43, dated 3 February 1331.
