Description
Petitioners
Ellis (Elias, Elia, Elies) Odewyn (Audoin).
Name(s)
Odewyn (Audoin), Ellis (Elias, Elia, Elies)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ellis Odewyn states that he has served the king, his father and grandfather in Gascony and in Scotland, and that for his service the king's grandfather gave him the castle and castellany of Puynormand for term of life, for a certain sum, and also 30 marks from the issues of the castellany for term of life; and the king's father confirmed that gift. He states that he has held it for 22 years, and has pleaded for the right of the castellany for 14 years before the King of France against three Abbots of La Faise, five Masters of the Hospital of La Launde, of the Order of St John [of Jerusalem] and two Abbots of Guitres, and has always successfully defended the king's right at his own costs; and he defended the castle in the last war in Gascony, when it was attacked three times, with his own men and provisions: as Oliver de Ingham, then Seneschal, will testify, and he spent on that defence more than he received in wages from the king or his father. He now holds neither that castle nor any other wardenship, and has been living in England for a year and four months, suing to the king and his council. He requests some ordinance that will be to the king's honour and his profit, and will be a good example to others, and enable him to continue to serve the king for the rest of his life.
Nature of endorsement
Because it is a well-known thing that he has served the king, grandfather of the present king, well and loyally, and his father, and the present king, and has often [suffered] for their service, it seems to the council that he should be granted the castellany of Bourg for term of life, in compensation for what he held at Puynormand, from which he has been expelled, which was worth much more, if it please the king: since he had the other for term of life.
