Description
Petitioners
William Bernard (Guilhem Bernat), Lord of Salles.
Name(s)
Lord of Salles, William Bernard (Guilhem Bernat)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William Bernard, Lord of Salles, states that he refused to acknowledge that he held his land of Salles from the Lord of Bearn rather than the king, despite imprisonment and other duresses, and that the Lord of Bearn, with the aid of the King of France, during the last war seized and occupied his land and cut down his woods, and harassed his people: and he still does so, and continues to hold the land contrary to the form of the peace made at the end of the war. He requests compensation for his lost land and all his wrongs, so that he might live and serve the king honourably, and he and his children might not be impoverished; and he asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might be ordered to pay him the wages due to him, his brother and his uncle for their service in the war in Gascony, and that he might have compensation for a horse lost in that war.
Nature of endorsement
[Deleted] The king and council have ordained for his estate. He is to have £10 from the king's wardrobe for his expenses in his country. And he is further to have a command to the Constable of Bordeaux to pay him his wages, and he is also to have £100 tournois annually until the king has been informed of his losses and damages.
Places mentioned
Salles, [Guyenne, France]
Bearn, [France]
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
[Gaston], Lord of Bearn
[Charles IV], King of France.
Note
From the hand and language, this petition comes from the aftermath of the war of St Sardos, and most probably from the early years of the reign of Edward III. It would seem likely to predate the instructions to pay the petitioner, his brother and his uncle on m.4 of C 61/41, which are dated 18 August 1329.
