Description
Petitioners
Remfre (Ramfre) de Durefort (Durfort), knight, of the Agenais.
Name(s)
de Durefort (Durfort), Remfre (Ramfre)
Addressees
King; council.
Nature of request
Remfre de Durefort makes eight requests:1) He asks that the money promised to him by the king in part satisfaction of his damages might be assigned to him from the rent which the king has from the salt of Agen or from the bailiwick of the castle of Puymirol or of Penne-d'Agenais, or of Tournon-d'Agenais, or wherever else it pleases the king.2) He asks that he received his greatest damage from being captured and imprisoned in the castle of Penne-d'Agenais for five and a half years, he might have the keeping of this castle; or, if that is not possible, that he might have confirmation of the keeping of the castle of Tournon-d'Agenais, granted to him by the Earl of Lincoln. He makes a further request about wages.3) He asks that the Seneschal of Gascony and of the Agenais might be ordered to preserve him and his people in all the franchises and possessions that he had at the beginning of the war, before he was captured.4) He asks that he might be given, of the king's grace, half a tithe and a certain rent which the Treasurer of the Agenais bought from his kinsman, Rater de Durefort, as it is the custom in the Agenais that the nearest kinsman can take back anything sold out of the lineage; or, if this does not please the king, that he might have them for what the Treasurer paid for them. And he asks the king to do this in satisfaction of the £1000 that he king promised him.5) He asks that the justice in three parishes in his land, which was taken from him by force, might be returned to him. Or, if this does not please the king, that he might have half the justice, and he will give the king the land on which a good town might be built, half of this town to belong to the king and half to Remfre.6) If it does not please the king to give him either the whole of the justice in these three parishes or a half, he asks that he might have petty justice, leaving assaults and murders to the king.7) He complains that the king's grace to the Gascons has been badly shared out, some getting too much, and others, such as himself, too little. [Much of this request has been deleted.]8) He asks the council for pity and a swift response, as he has been nearly a year in this country without response.
Nature of endorsement
For this petition, all articles are answered; nor is there to be a mention in this of assignment of debts.[Deleted] With regard to the castle of Penne-d'Agenais, the king has delivered it to another, but the Seneschal and Constable are to be ordered to allow him to have the castle of Tournon-d'Agenais at the king's pleasure during his good behaviour, with the former fee, as the king does not wish to increase the wages.[Deleted] With regard to the third petition, the Seneschal of Gascony is to be ordered to maintain him in the franchises which he had at the beginning of the war: that is to say, when the land was delivered to the king of France.[Deleted] With regard to the petition concerning the tithe, the king does not wish to sell what he has purchased.[Deleted] With regard to the petition concerning the justice, the Seneschal is to be ordered to advise himself concerning the thing, according to what he sees will be to the king's profit, and to inform the king.
