Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/283/14120
Date
[? 1327-? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Galhard (Gaillard) de Saint-Symphorien, Lord of Landiras.
Name(s)
de Saint-Symphorien, Lord of Landiras, Galhard (Gaillard)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Galhard, Lord of Landiras, makes three petitions:1) He states that he has lost his land to the value of £1000 of annual rent as the result of his adherence to the king and his father in the war in Gascony, and is so impoverished that he cannot maintain his estate honourably. He requests some suitable compensation.2) He states that the king's grandfather gave his father, John Roselli, jurisdiction over the castle and castellany of Landiras. He asks the king to confirm this gift, and to order it to be put into execution.3) He asks that the Constable of Bordeaux might be ordered to give him satisfaction for debts owed to his father by the king's grandfather for his service in the war in Scotland.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the first: the king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself concerning losses and damages, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied. With regard to the second: He is to show what [evidence] he has. With regard to the third: he is to show the obligations or other things that he has for the debt.
Places mentioned
Landiras, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Scotland.
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Edward [I], King of England
John (Joan, Jean) Roselli (Roussel), knight, father of petitioner.
Note
From the mention of the king's father and grandfather, this petition would seem to date from the beginning of the reign of Edward III, and from the mention of the sending of a new seneschal, to either around February 1327 (before the appointment of John de Haustede) or to around June 1332 (before the appointment of Oliver de Ingham). The dating of SC 8/282/14093, which has an identical endorsement, suggests that the latter date is more likely. See the discussion of the petition in M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War (Oxford, 1990), p. 242.
