SC 8/283/14114
Date
[? 1327-? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Stephen (Esteben) Maynhan (Maignan, Maynhau), burgess of Penne-d'Agenais.
Name(s)
Maynhan (Maignan, Maynhau), Stephen (Esteben)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Stephen Maynhan, burgess of Penne-d'Agenais, states that through the war between the king's father and the king of France, he lost wine and wools that he had in his lodging in Sainte-Livrade-sur-Lot, and all his other possessions, which are in the possession of the king of France's people, and that no compensation has been given to him, although he is risking his life carrying provisions and other things between Bordeaux, Penne and Puymirol, and has suffered imprisonment and robbery. He asks that he might be given such compensation that he might be able to live and maintain his estate, for himself and his children; and he asks that Oliver de Ingham might be informed of this.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the damages and losses, the king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages given and received, and the damages inflicted, and the condition of the people, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied.

Note
From the mention of the king's father, this petition would seem to date from the beginning of the reign of Edward III, and from the mention of the sending of a new seneschal, to either around February 1327 (before the appointment of John de Haustede) or to around June 1332 (before the appointment of Oliver de Ingham). The mention of Oliver de Ingham is ambiguous, as he was seneschal between March 1326 and February 1327 as well as between 1332 and 1343, but the dating of SC 8/282/14093, which has an identical endorsement, suggests that the latter date is more likely. See the discussion of the petition in M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War (Oxford, 1990), p. 244.
