Reference
SC 8/283/14103
Date
[1327-1329]
Description
Petitioners
Auger de Podenx (Poudenx), Lord of Baillens.
Name(s)
de Podenx (Poudenx), Lord of Baillens, Auger
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Auger de Podenx, Lord of Baillens makes four requests:1) He states that while he had the keeping of the castle of Pontonx-sur-l'Adour during the war between the King's father and the King of France, the French entered his lands and did damage there to the value of £3000 in petty tournois, as well as killing many of his household and his tenants, and the King of France still holds Castaignos-Souslens. He is greatly impoverished by this, and requests compensation so that he can maintain his estate.2) He requests some castellany or bailiwick where he and his household can stay until he can recover his lands, as he is currently forced to stay in other people's houses.3) He requests the mill in the bailiwick of Asgusan, which does not bring the king much money, for term of life, in part compensation for the damage done to him.4) He states that he is in arrears for the bailiwick of Pontonx-sur-l'Adour and Gosse and Seignanx. He asks that the money owed to him for his wages might be allowed against this, and that if he is owed more, that the constable might pay him.
Nature of endorsement
The King has ordained for his estate. The present seneschal and constable etc. are to be ordered to let him have £20 tournois annually from the mills until the king is informed about his losses; and he is to have a command to the constable to pay him his wages.

Note
The instructions to the Seneschal and Constable on m.9 of C 61/45 are dated 2 March 7 Edward III (1333), and are in response to a petition from Auger that, although he was granted the mill for three years from 29 September 3 Edward III (1329), the Seneschal and Constable removed him two months later. This petition would therefore seem to date from 1327-1329. See the discussion in M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War (Oxford, 1990), p. 242. Check C 61/43 m.17.
