Reference
SC 8/283/14102
Date
[1313-? 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Margaret (Marguerite, Margaride) de Girunde (Gironde), widow of Ponts de Chasteilhoun (Castillon).
Name(s)
de Girunde (Gironde), Margaret (Marguerite, Margaride)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Margaret de Girunde, widow of Ponts de Chasteilhoun, and mother and guardian of Ponts their son, states that the boy owes the king a certain sum of money for the debt of Ponts de Chasteilhoun his grandfather, and that his father accounted with the then Constable of Bordeaux for this debt; and that the king and his father owe her son money for debts due to his father and grandfather, for which she has letters patent of the king's father and bills of the wardrobe. She asks that the present Seneschal of Gascony and Constable of Bordeaux, or those who will occupy those posts, or their lieutenants, might be ordered to set one debt against the other, and to give satisfaction to her son for any money that then remains due to him.
Nature of endorsement
The seneschal and constable are to be ordered to inform themselves about the debts she owes the king and the debts the king owes her; and they are to inform the king on this, clearly and openly, before the feast of Easter; and in the meantime they are to halt the exaction of the debts which the said Margaret owes the king.
Places mentioned
[Gascony, France].
People mentioned
Ponts de Chasteilhoun (Castillon), [Lord of Castillon-Medoc]
Ponts [de Chasteilhoun (Castillon)], son of Ponts de Chasteilhoun
Ponts de Chasteilhoun (Castillon), father of Ponts de Chasteilhoun
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
Gascon Rolls 1307-17 no. 169 is dated 26 December 1308 and no. 911 is dated 29 April 1313. From these it would seem that a sum of money was granted to Ponts by Edward I, which is probably the sum mentioned here: this would date this petition to the reign of Edward II. As Ponts the father was clearly alive in 1313, this petition would then seem most likely to date from 1313-1327.
