Reference
SC 8/283/14101
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Hugh de Gavaudune (Gavaudun).
Name(s)
de Gavaudune (Gavaudun), Hugh
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Hugh de Gavaudune makes two requests:1) He states that he has served the king and his father since the first war in Gascony, when the Earl of Kent was there, and that the king's father granted him, for his service, £30 sterling of rent from forfeitures in Gascony, to receive at pleasure, for which he has letters patent; but he has received none of this. He asks that he might have these £30 from the bailiwick of Gosse and Seignanx, or wherever it please the king, and that this gift might be for term of life.2) He asks that the present Constable of Bordeaux, or the person who will be Constable, might be ordered to pay him the arrears of this sum.
Nature of endorsement
[Apparently deleted] With regard to the first article: the king wishes to be informed who holds the bailiwicks and how. With regard to the arrears of the £30: he is to show what he has from the king, father of our lord the present king, for the annuity, and the king will do for him what is reasonable.Afterwards it was agreed by the council that he will have the £30 mentioned in the bill, together with the arrears, from the bailiwicks mentioned above or elsewhere in the Duchy, for as long as it pleases the king; and for this he is to have a command to the present Constable etc.; and he is not to be removed from this without a special command etc.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
Gause (Gosse), [Gascony, France]
Synyens (Seignanx), [Gascony, France]
Duchy [of Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
[Edmund of Woodstock], Earl of Kent.
Note
From the mention of the king's father and of the Earl of Kent, Lieutenant in Gascony between July 1324 and January 1326, this petition would seem to date from the early years of the reign of Edward III. If no.78 of C 81/136 is in response to this, it is dated 11 February 1 Edward III (1327).
