SC 8/282/14087
Date
[1329]
Description
Petitioners
Lop Burgoun (Loup-Bergunh) de Burdeaux (Bordeaux, Bordeu), formerly warden of Bayonne castle.
Name(s)
de Burdeaux (Bordeaux, Bordeu), Lop Burgoun (Loup-Bergunh)
Addressees
King.
Occupation
warden of Bayonne castle
Nature of request
Lop Burgoun de Burdeaux states that when Maurice de Berkele was Seneschal of Gascony a sergeant of the King of France was captured and imprisoned in Bayonne castle, and the King of France has condemned the King of England to pay a large sum of money, and Lop, because he was warden of the castle then, to pay another large sum. Lop has letters from the seneschal to keep him from harm in the matter of the prison, a transcript of which is sewn to this petition, but the King of France has ordered that the money should be levied from his goods. He asks that he might have such a remedy that he might be kept from harm in this matter.
Nature of endorsement
The present seneschal of Gascony and constable of Bordeaux etc. are to be ordered that, when they have seen the letters mentioned by the petition, and taken advice with the council of Gascony, they are to ordain for the said Lop to be kept without harm, according to the form of the said letters.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France].
People mentioned
Maurice de Berkele (Berkeley), Seneschal of Gascony
[Philip V], King of France.
Note
The petition must date from after the period of office of Maurice de Berkeley, Seneschal of Gascony who was appointed in April 1320 and may have served until the appointment of Fulk Lestrange in July 1321, and can be more closely dated by the instructions to keep the petitioner from harm on this matter, see m.5 of C 61/41, which are dated 3 August 1329. The indemnity formerly attached to the petition, C 47/24/3/10, is dated 13 Edward II (8 July 1319-7 July 1320). This petition is clearly the second or later of a group of petitions from this petitioner on one piece of parchment: the first has not been identified.
