Reference
SC 8/282/14069
Date
[c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Amaubin (Amaluyn, Amaneu) de Varreys (Bares), lord of Montferrand.
Name(s)
de Varreys (Bares), lord of Montferrand, Amaubin (Amaluyn, Amaneu)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Amaubin de Varreys, lord of Montferrand, states that Bertrand Dugout, formerly vicomte of Lomagne, left the manor of Veyrines with its appurtenances in his testament to the heirs of Amaubin, the son of his sister, and that the manor was then seized by force by the Count of Armagnac, and has now been recovered by the king and taken into his hand. He asks that the Seneschal of Gascony might be ordered to return the manor to Amaubin's heirs, as the manor never belonged to the Duke of Guyenne, but was purchased by the Vicomte.
Nature of endorsement
This bill is to be sent to the Seneschal of Gascony for him to advise himself on the things contained in it, and further to do justice and reason according to the laws and customs of the country.
Places mentioned
Montferrand (Montferrand-en-Bordelais), [Guyenne, France]
Lomagne, [Gascony, France]
Veyrines, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
Bertrand (Bertran) Dugout (du Got, de Goth), vicomte of Lomagne
[John (Jean, Johan) I], Count of Armagnac.
Note
This petition would seem to date from around the time of the process held between the English and the French at Langon in September 1334, which foundered on the issue of the surrender of this manor to the French crown, among other things. The manor (without its maison-forte) was surrendered on 26 March 1335. This matter is discussed in M. Vale, The Angevin Legacy and the Hundred Years War (Oxford, 1990), pp.254-5.
