Description
Petitioners
Arnold (Arnaut) de Scot.
Name(s)
de Scot, Arnold (Arnaut)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Arnold de Scot states that he served the king's father with fifteen companions from Gascony in his last war in Scotland, where he was at Melrose Abbey and lost four companions at Blackamore, and he was wounded and captured there, and afterwards ransomed, and that he then served the king in the late war in Gascony, in the company of Matthew de Luchoun, as the Earl of Kent, Oliver de Ingham and Adam de Lymbergh know well. He requests the sergeanty of Bayonne in recognition of this service, and asks the king to send his writs on this to the mayor and council of the town.

The king does not wish to increase the number of sergeants until he is apprised of the state of the Duchy.

Note
This petition must be from the reign of Edward III, as it mentions the petitioner's service in Scotland in the reign of the King's father, at the time of the Melrose Abbey affair (1316), and as it names Edmund, Earl of Kent as a witness to his service in Gascony, it must be from before his execution in March 1330. Bain, vol. III no.1015 dates the petition to 1330.
